The Schutzstaffel (SS)

The Schutzstaffel, better known as the “SS,” were protection squads of Nazi Germany (Glossary). They started out as special guards to Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders. In 1934, the SS was considered the “private army of the Nazi party” (SS Police State). Eventually, the SS became in charge of collecting political intelligence. They even took control of the German Police, concentration camps, and other powerful enforcement positions. Terrible events, such as Hitler’s Night and Fog Decree and the mass killing of Jews and other victims, were organized by the SS (Glossary).

The Gestapo were the German Secret Police, which were under the SS control. The group was started by Hermann Goring in April 1993. They probed political crimes and the activities of people opposed to the Nazi’s ideas. The name “Gestapo” surprisingly came about from a mail carrier who thought that the original name “Geheime Staatspolizei” was too long to fit on a rubber stamp. The mail carrier decided to abbreviate the name taking the “ge” from Geheime with the “sta” and “po” from Staatspolizei to make the name “Gestapo” (SS Police State).

The Gestapo had 40,000 agents. Each agent had a network of informants and spies (The Gestapo is Born, 2001). During that time, it was very unclear to most people who was part of the Gestapo, and who wasn’t. Section B4 of the Gestapo was led by Adolf Eichmann. This group dealt specifically with “the Jewish question” (The Gestapo is Born, 2001). The Gestapo went with Hitler’s armies into every country to do their secret job. With torture and cruel interrogation methods, the Gestapo were very effective (The Gestapo is Born, 2001).
